Families plant 2,000 mangroves on Qeshm Island as Iran expands blue carbon restoration
tehrantimes.comFamilies in Soheili village on Qeshm Island have planted 2,000 mangrove saplings as part of a community-led conservation initiative. Children raised the seedlings at home for two months before planting them with their mothers and other family members, according to IRNA. The event also included painting contests, cooking competitions, and an exhibition of local products. Iran's Hara mangrove forests cover more than 27,000 hectares and are dominated by Avicennia marina. Mangroves are powerful carbon sinks, storing 10 to 50 times more carbon per area than terrestrial forests, but the IUCN classifies Persian Gulf mangrove forests as vulnerable. The Department of Environment says it has restored mangroves across Hormozgan, Bushehr, and Khuzestan provinces and is developing a national action plan for conservation and restoration.
