Falmouth Harbour in Cornwall has begun retailing hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) to leisure and commercial boat owners at its fuel berth. The renewable fuel, made from recycled cooking oil and farm waste, can reduce carbon emissions by 50-90% compared with fossil diesel. The harbour has already used HVO in its own workboats for a year before making it available to customers. The fuel suits engines approved to the EN 15940 standard, but owners should verify compatibility with their manufacturer. Harbour officials highlight benefits like cleaner combustion, better storage stability, and reduced odour. This move makes Falmouth one of the first UK harbours to sell HVO, supporting the shift to lower-carbon marine operations without requiring major engine modifications.
