The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has launched a waste recycling program at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, with plans to expand to other airports. The initiative includes indoor color-coded bins for waste segregation, and future phases will involve outdoor bins and partnerships with certified waste management companies to recycle plastics, glass, cans, and organic waste. FAAN reported that all 1,383 tonnes of waste generated at the airport in 2024 went to landfills unsorted. The program aims to reduce landfill waste, lower operational costs by creating demand for recycled materials, and eventually generate electricity through waste-to-power technology. The recycling program is part of FAAN's Carbon Management Plan under the Airport Carbon Accreditation program. The initiative covers segregation at the point of disposal, making passengers and staff active participants. FAAN says the program makes business sense by reducing procurement costs and aligns with Sustainable Development Goals.
