F1 2026 biofuel switch: how the sport is going fully sustainable with carbon capture and waste-based fuels

Formula 1 is switching to 100% sustainable biofuel for the 2026 season. Every carbon atom in the fuel must come from non-fossil sources such as direct air capture, municipal waste, or second-generation agricultural waste. The fuel must be drop-in compatible with the new 1.6L V6 hybrid power units, meaning no major engine redesign is needed. A 1% allowance exists for additives that cannot yet be sourced sustainably, and mass balancing is banned to ensure full traceability. The program is designed to help F1 reach its net zero target by 2030. Beyond racing, the technology could accelerate decarbonization in aviation, heavy transport, and marine engines. Fuel chemistry is now a competitive battleground, with teams and suppliers optimizing combustion speed, knock resistance, and energy density. The performance gap between different fuel blends could become a deciding factor in the 2026 championship.
