ExxonMobil has begun carbon capture and storage operations at Nucor's direct reduced iron facility in Convent, Louisiana. The project can capture and store up to 800,000 metric tons of CO2 per year, which the company says makes it the lowest-carbon DRI at scale in North America. This is ExxonMobil's third third-party CCS startup and its second in 2026. The company also reported that its Rose carbon storage project cleared a regulatory hurdle with approval from the Texas Railroad Commission. ExxonMobil operates over 1,300 miles of CO2 pipelines along the Gulf Coast and says its CCS network could reduce emissions by more than 100 million metric tons annually. The Nucor agreement, signed in 2023, highlights how CCS is being deployed in hard-to-abate industrial sectors like steel.
