Expert urges Nigeria to accelerate renewable energy investment citing $480 billion global fossil fuel savings in 2025
thenationonlineng.netA new report from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) shows that renewable energy saved countries an estimated $480 billion in fossil fuel costs in 2025. Solar photovoltaic power remained competitive at $44 per MWh, while onshore wind fell to $33/MWh and offshore wind to $78/MWh. The data covers 20 major economies representing about 80 percent of global renewable generation, with China leading savings at $177 billion, followed by the US at $35 billion and Brazil at $32 billion. Dr Femi Oye, CEO of SMEFUNDS, argues that Nigeria and other fossil fuel dependent economies should treat these numbers as a signal to accelerate clean energy investment. He points out that renewable energy is now a strategic economic choice, not just an environmental one. The article also highlights a household tech tool called Kike AI, a WhatsApp based app that helps families track cooking gas use and reduce food waste, as an example of how simple innovations can support the energy transition at the household level.
