EVs now nine times cheaper to drive than petrol or diesel in the UK, Carbon Brief analysis finds
carbonbrief.orgNew Carbon Brief analysis finds UK electric vehicles are now up to nine times cheaper to drive than petrol or diesel cars, based on current fuel prices. Off-peak home charging works out at 2.3p per mile, while petrol costs around 20.1p and diesel 21p per mile. Even at the domestic price cap, EVs cost roughly 7p per mile, still three times cheaper than fossil fuel cars. The running cost gap has widened because oil prices jumped above $100 a barrel after Middle East tensions and strikes on Russian refineries pushed up petrol and diesel prices. Carbon Brief estimates EV drivers now save around £1,200 a year in fuel costs. Battery EVs are only 6% of UK cars on the road, but they made up about 30% of new car sales in August, so the fleet is shifting gradually. Public charging remains more expensive, though around 90% of EV charging happens at home.
