Evonik is now selling peracetic acid in Europe with a lower carbon footprint, using bio-based acetic acid and its own low-carbon hydrogen peroxide. The company applies a mass balance approach certified by TUV Rheinland under ISO 22095-2:2026 to calculate the emissions reduction. Customers can claim Scope 3 reductions without changing product quality or regulatory approvals. The disinfectant breaks down into water, oxygen, and acetic acid after use. Evonik says the low-carbon version is available immediately across all its PAA brands. The move is part of the company's roadmap to net zero emissions by 2040, but the product lets buyers cut supply chain emissions now rather than waiting for full decarbonization.

The mass balance approach here is interesting. They are not replacing all inputs at once, just allocating the low carbon share to specific customers via a pass system. That is how a lot of chemical decarbonization will work in practice until full production lines switch over.

Scope 3 reduction claims depend entirely on how the mass balance is audited. TUV Rheinland certification helps but the real test is whether buyers can actually count these reductions in their own reporting without double counting. The ISO standard they cite is from 2026 which is new.
