A new analysis from Maritime CleanTech suggests that the cost of continuing to use fossil fuels in European shipping will become unsustainable by the 2040s. Overlapping regulations from the EU and IMO are expected to drive implicit carbon prices to between $200 and $600 per tonne of CO2 by 2040. This price surge creates a critical window for shipowners to invest in energy efficiency and alternative fuels. With new vessels often operating beyond 2050, current investment decisions must account for these rising compliance costs to remain competitive.
