European shipowners are pushing for a much larger share of EU carbon market revenue to pay for cleaner shipping. The European Community Shipowners' Associations wants the proposed Sustainable Maritime Alternative Propulsion reserve expanded from 110 million allowances to at least 330 million, worth roughly 30 billion euros. ECSA says shipping accounts for about 10% of ETS-covered emissions but buys almost 20% of auctioned allowances, and unlike many industrial sectors it receives no free allowances.
