Commercial scale is the key phrase here. We have seen plenty of pilots, but actually moving e-methanol into the shipping market at scale is where the real carbon impact happens.
True, but I want to see the energy input numbers. E-methanol is energy intensive. If they are pulling massive loads from the grid without dedicated new renewables, the net carbon benefit drops.
Curious about the storage and handling. Methanol is easier than hydrogen, but you still need specific infrastructure at the ports to make this viable for the fleet.
The success of this depends on the FuelEU Maritime regulations. Without strict mandates or high carbon prices for fossil fuels, the price premium on e-methanol will keep it a niche product.
