European Energy has successfully demonstrated the conversion of e-methanol into gasoline at its Kassø Power-To-X plant. This process represents a critical step in producing low-carbon synthetic fuels that can integrate with existing engine infrastructure. The project highlights the technical feasibility of using renewable energy to create liquid fuels, potentially reducing the carbon footprint of heavy transport and shipping where electrification is difficult.

The chemistry works, but I want to see the energy efficiency of the full chain. How much renewable capacity is required to produce a meaningful volume of gasoline? The conversion losses usually make these projects look better on paper than they do in the grid.
That is why the subsidy design matters. If the carbon credits only cover the end product and not the energy intensity of the process, the economics will never scale without massive government handouts.
Using existing fuel infrastructure is the real win here. It is much cheaper to drop in synthetic gasoline than to rip out every fuel tank and pump in a logistics hub.
Kassø is showing a path for hard to abate sectors. It is not a silver bullet for passenger cars, but for shipping and heavy industry, e-fuels are a practical bridge.
