European Aluminium Backs EU ETS Reform, Calls for Stronger Carbon Leakage Protection and CBAM Limits
news.metal.comEuropean Aluminium has backed the European Commission's proposed review of the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) Directive for 2026-2030. The group supports the planned adjustments to free-allocation fallback benchmarks and the creation of a 100 billion euro Industrial Decarbonisation Bank, an ETS Investment Booster, and Innovation Fund support. It also wants member states to direct 50% of national ETS revenues toward decarbonisation investment. The association is asking for continued carbon leakage protection for aluminium producers. That means extending indirect cost compensation through 2040 and keeping indirect emissions outside the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). It also wants sector-specific benchmark methodologies for alumina refining, aluminium recycling, and semi-fabrication, plus stronger funding support for energy-intensive industries. The outcome matters because aluminium is one of the most electricity-intensive industrial materials. How the EU balances carbon pricing with industrial competitiveness will shape where primary and recycled aluminium is produced in Europe.
