European airports commit to net zero: 328 hubs across 38 countries pledge to eliminate operational carbon emissions by 2050 or earlier

A coalition of 328 airports across 38 European countries has formally pledged to eliminate all carbon emissions under their direct control by 2050 or earlier. The commitment covers 83% of European passenger traffic and includes 36 hubs that have already reached net zero for Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. Italy, France, Albania, and Romania added 14 new regional gateways to the pledge, with 106 airports targeting an aggressive 2030 deadline. The ACI EUROPE Net Zero Resolution requires signatories to publish public decarbonisation roadmaps. So far, 109 such plans have been filed, including 19 updated frameworks covering 48 airports. The shift means travel industry buyers and corporate travel planners now face a new baseline: sustainable airport infrastructure is becoming a core requirement for route planning and destination selection, not a marketing add-on.
