Europe's first Gold Standard soil carbon credits issued for regenerative agriculture in France and Belgium
serrarigroup.comSouth Pole and Gaïago have issued the first carbon credits under Gold Standard's Soil Organic Carbon Framework Methodology. The credits come from a regenerative agriculture program in France and Belgium, covering 6,000 verified hectares initially. The wider program includes 727 farms and could expand to 39,282 hectares, with a forecast 264,174 tCO2e of removals in the first crediting period. Farmers in the program use reduced or zero tillage, year-round cover cropping, and a biostimulant product to build soil organic carbon. The project applies FAO's GSOC MRV protocol and Gold Standard's soil carbon methodology, which gives buyers a structured way to verify removals. Started in 2022 with a 20-year horizon, the issuance is an early signal that soil carbon can move from methodology to market in Europe.
