The Greensand project in the Danish North Sea has become the European Union's first full-scale carbon storage site. Led by Ineos Energy, Harbour Energy, and Nordsøfonden, it captures CO2 from Danish biomethane plants, ships it on the Carbon Destroyer 1, and injects it into a depleted oil field 1,800 meters below the seabed. The site starts at 400,000 tonnes per year and could expand to 8 million tonnes. This operational facility marks a shift from CCS pilots to commercial deployment. It gives European industries a working transport and storage chain, though scaling capture projects remains the bottleneck. The project supports EU targets of 50 million tonnes stored annually by 2030. For anyone tracking carbon removal infrastructure, this is a concrete data point on how offshore storage is being built.
