Europe's electricity industry association Eurelectric is calling on EU policymakers to strengthen the Emissions Trading System instead of scaling it back. The group says a predictable and meaningful carbon price is needed to guide long-term investment in grids, renewables, and electrification, as Europe faces rising power demand and ageing network infrastructure. Eurelectric points to an annual clean energy investment gap of up to €500 billion and estimates the power sector will need to invest more than €5 trillion by 2050 to decarbonise. It also says the sector has delivered 75% of emissions reductions across EU ETS sectors. The message from the power sector is clear: keep the ETS ambitious, because weaker carbon pricing would slow the investment signal at a time when Europe needs to compete globally.
