A study from Chalmers University of Technology suggests that current EU regulations for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) may be pushing producers toward inefficient production methods. The rules currently favor carbon capture from biomass combustion over more efficient biomass gasification, which could lead to higher costs and increased electricity demand. This regulatory gap creates a conflict with the EU's own energy efficiency directives. By penalizing the most resource-efficient pathways, the policy risks creating stranded assets and increasing the financial burden of decarbonizing the aviation sector.
