The EU's first full-scale CO2 storage site, Greensand, has entered commercial operation off the coast of Denmark. The facility, located in a depleted oil field 1,800m below the seabed, will initially inject over 100,000 tonnes of CO2 per year. In its first phase, it aims to store 400,000 tonnes of biogenic CO2 annually, captured from Danish biomethane production, with plans to scale to 4-8 million tonnes per year by 2030. The project is led by Ineos Energy with partners Harbour Energy and Nordsøfonden, and received support from EU ETS funding. CO2 is transported by truck and ship to the site, using a dedicated carrier vessel. The reservoir has been verified for safety and stability. This milestone demonstrates that carbon capture and storage can move from demonstration to deployment, providing a practical path for industrial decarbonization in Europe.
