INEOS has started commercial operations at Greensand, the EU's first full-scale offshore carbon storage facility. The project stores CO2 in a depleted oil field in the Danish North Sea, sourced initially from Danish biomethane plants. It can handle up to 400,000 tonnes of CO2 per year now, with plans to expand to 4-8 million tonnes annually. The project uses a dedicated CO2 carrier, Carbon Destroyer 1, and a terminal at Port Esbjerg. INEOS says this proves the full CCS value chain works. But Europe needs to capture 50 million tonnes a year by 2030, so this is a small start. The real question is whether EU regulation and infrastructure will let capture projects scale fast enough. The project shows the technology side works, but the policy side still lags.

Nice to see an actual CCS project running, not just a pilot. But 400k tonnes is tiny compared to the EU's 50M target by 2030. The biomethane source makes sense for early volumes, but industrial capture is the hard part. Where's the investment going to come from?

They're storing in a depleted oil field. I'd like to know the injection pressure and monitoring plan. Leakage risk is the thing that kills public acceptance. Also, what's the energy penalty for liquefying and transporting? Not clear from the article.
