The European Union's first full-scale carbon storage project has started operations. INEOS's Greensand project will inject CO2 into the depleted Nini West oil field in the Danish North Sea, about 250 km offshore. The first phase can store up to 400,000 tonnes of CO2 per year, with plans to expand to 4 million to 8 million tonnes at full capacity. The project takes liquefied CO2 from Danish biomethane plants, trucks it to the Port of Esbjerg, and ships it to the offshore injection site about 1,800 metres below the seabed. Norway's Northern Lights began storing CO2 in August 2025, but Norway is not an EU member. Greensand is therefore the first storage project inside the EU, giving European industrial emitters a domestic route for captured carbon.
