EU's first full-scale carbon storage project Greensand starts operating in Danish North Sea

Located in the Danish North Sea, the project will initially store up to 400,000 tonnes of CO2 per year, with plans to scale to between 4 million and 8 million tonnes annually at full capacity. The CO2, sourced from Danish biomethane plants, is liquefied, trucked to the Port of Esbjerg, and shipped to the depleted Nini West oil field about 250 km offshore, where it is injected 1,800 meters below the seabed. This marks a significant step for the EU in deploying carbon capture and storage as a climate tool. Norway's Northern Lights project began storing CO2 in August 2025, but Norway is not an EU member. The Greensand project offers a path for European industries to reduce emissions while maintaining production, as highlighted by EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen. The project demonstrates the practical logistics of CCS, including transport and injection, and could serve as a template for future large-scale storage sites in the region.
