The European Commission has released proposed updated benchmark values for the EU Emissions Trading System for the 2026 to 2030 period. These benchmarks determine how many free carbon allowances industrial sites receive, with the current proposal aiming to keep free coverage at around 75% to prevent a sudden surge in costs for industry. Alongside these benchmarks, the EU is introducing an ETS investment booster with a 30 billion euro budget to fund decarbonization projects. The Commission is currently holding a public consultation before finalizing the benchmarks in June.
