The European Commission has proposed a common rating scheme for data centres to improve transparency on energy and water use. The scheme applies to facilities above 500 kW and will cover waste heat reuse, on-site clean generation, and grid flexibility. First labels are expected in 2027, with a review by end of 2028. The goal is to support the EU's plan to triple data centre capacity without tripling pressure on electricity grids or water resources. A separate consultation on minimum performance standards for data centres is open until 14 December 2026. The Commission says reusing half of European data centres' waste heat could cover heating demand for 4 million households. The rating scheme is a delegated regulation, so Parliament and Council can object but not amend it.
