The European Commission has introduced a new rating scheme requiring data centers with 500kW or more capacity to disclose their energy and water use, along with clean energy capabilities and waste heat reuse. The aim is to manage the grid and resource impact of Europe's expanding data center sector. First sustainability labels are expected in 2027, with Vice-President Teresa Ribera emphasizing that tripling capacity cannot mean tripling pressure on grids, water, and energy bills. The announcement coincides with other clean energy moves: the EIB and Crédit Agricole committed €600 million to European grid infrastructure, and the African Development Bank granted $20 million for green hydrogen projects in four African nations. These steps highlight a broader push to align digital growth with decarbonization and grid resilience.
