An EU funded project is demonstrating technology that breaks down biogas into hydrogen and solid carbon instead of burning it for electricity. The process uses methane pyrolysis to split methane from biogas into hydrogen gas and solid carbon black, avoiding direct CO2 emissions. The hydrogen can be used for industrial heat, transport fuel, or grid injection while the carbon has commercial value in tires, batteries, and construction materials. Early results suggest the system can achieve near zero emissions from biogas feedstocks. The project is still at pilot scale but backers see a path to commercial plants within a few years. If the economics hold, this could give biogas plants a second revenue stream from both hydrogen and carbon products while cutting their carbon footprint further.
