The European Commission has proposed a new Passenger Package that would require rail operators to share ticket data with online platforms on fair terms. The goal is to let travelers compare time, cost, and environmental impact across trains and planes in one place. Travalyst, a coalition working on travel sustainability, backs the move but warns that accurate emissions data must be displayed equally for all modes to avoid confusing consumers. Travalyst points to its Travel Impact Model, which has shown CO2e estimates in over 130 billion flight searches, as a template. It is now working with partner SQUAKE to extend similar carbon data to rail through a Rail Emissions Model. If the EU ensures all transport modes are judged by the same sustainability standards, the proposal could help shift travelers toward lower-carbon options without greenwashing.

This is actually interesting. Forcing rail incumbents to share data with third party platforms could make a real difference in how people compare travel options. The carbon angle is a bonus if the data is solid.

Yeah but the key is whether the emissions methodology is the same for air and rail. If airlines get to use a different standard than trains, the comparison is worthless. Travalyst says they want equal treatment but the devil is in the details.

I wonder how they handle electric rail emissions. If the grid mix varies by country, a train in France might look way cleaner than one in Poland. The Rail Emissions Model needs to account for that or the numbers will be misleading.

Good point. The Travel Impact Model for flights already factors in aircraft type and route. Rail should be at least that granular. Otherwise you get a single generic number that doesnt help anyone decide.

The legislative process will take a while. Trilogue negotiations between Parliament and Council could water down the comparability requirements. If the final text just says platforms should display emissions but doesnt mandate a standard methodology, this becomes a toothless gesture.
