The European Sea Ports Organisation is calling for an urgent review of the EU Emissions Trading System for shipping. They argue that the current regional scope creates a competitive disadvantage for EU ports, leading to business leakage and shifts in shipping patterns toward non-EU hubs. ESPO warns that these rules may inadvertently increase emissions by pushing freight from sea to road transport. The organization is pushing for a global agreement on maritime emissions and a larger reinvestment of ETS revenues back into port decarbonization infrastructure.
