EU Lawmakers Vote to Scrap Emergency Brake on Carbon Border Levy
uk.news.yahoo.comThe European Parliament voted to remove a clause that would allow the EU to temporarily suspend its carbon border levy if import prices spike. Instead, they propose using revenue from the levy to compensate affected industries. The move sets up a clash with EU member states, which want to keep the option to suspend the fee under certain conditions, such as a price jump of more than 50% over six months. The carbon border levy, in force since January 2026, applies CO2 fees to imports like steel and fertilizers to prevent carbon leakage. The Parliament's decision to delete the emergency brake could strengthen the policy's predictability, but negotiators must now reconcile with member states. The final rules will also extend the levy to new products like washing machines and car parts.
