EU rapporteur Mohammed Chahim and members of the ENVI committee are discussing ways to expand the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). The goal is to include more carbon intensive goods, potentially adding 180 products to the tax scope by 2028 to prevent carbon leakage in the steel and aluminum sectors. Lawmakers are also debating a temporary decarbonization fund to support industries affected by the levy. However, European Commission officials have raised concerns that tying these funds to export performance could violate World Trade Organization rules.
