Members of the European Parliament are urging the European Commission to reassess how the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) applies to imports from Ukraine. The debate centers on whether the war-torn nation should receive exemptions or a specialized force majeure clause to protect its heavy industry. Ukraine is a major exporter of CBAM-covered goods, particularly iron and steel. While some MEPs support a rethink of the tax burden on Ukrainian producers, a previous Commission report found no grounds for a formal force majeure exemption.
