The European Commission has initiated LIFE HumedalES, a large scale project to restore 26,000 hectares of wetlands across Spain. The program aims to recover 43 different habitat types to increase biodiversity and improve natural defenses against floods and droughts. By restoring these degraded ecosystems, the project focuses on enhancing natural carbon sequestration and reducing water pollution. This initiative marks a significant shift in Europe's climate strategy by prioritizing nature based solutions for atmospheric carbon storage.

The intent here is clear, but I want to see the monitoring framework. Restoring 43 habitat types is a massive administrative task. If the carbon accounting is not rigorous, this risks becoming a vanity project rather than a verifiable climate win.

Agreed. The article mentions the 160 million euro price tag but does not explain how they will measure the actual carbon stored versus the baseline. Without those metrics, it is just a spending announcement.

Nature based solutions are great for the long term, but I am curious about the land use conflicts. Does this restoration overlap with planned corridors for energy transmission or new solar sites in these regions?
