EU Innovation Fund: 77 industrial projects get €3.4B for clean tech and carbon management
eutoday.netThe European Commission has selected 77 industrial and technology projects across 23 European Economic Area countries for around €3.4 billion in grants from the EU Innovation Fund. The money comes from Emissions Trading System auction revenue, so it is carbon pricing revenue being recycled into projects meant to cut emissions. The portfolio includes clean tech manufacturing, renewables, energy storage, critical raw materials processing, and industrial carbon management. For the first time, a small modular reactor project and a direct air capture and storage project are included. The Commission estimates the projects could avoid about 290 million tonnes of CO2 over their first ten years, but that is a projection, not a locked-in result. Grant agreements are expected in Q1 2027, and project developers still need to secure financing, permits, and final commercial decisions. The real test is whether EU funding attracts enough private capital to move these projects from selection to operation, especially in supply chains where Europe still depends heavily on imports.
