The European Union's Hydrogen Mechanism platform has completed its first round, reporting that 87% of clean hydrogen supply projects received interest from potential buyers. Over 200 suppliers found at least one interested offtaker, while half of the projects attracted three or more potential partners. This matchmaking service aims to bridge the gap between green hydrogen production and industrial demand. By facilitating these connections, the EU hopes to accelerate the deployment of low-carbon hydrogen infrastructure across the continent.

Interest is a soft metric. The real test is whether these matchmaking leads turn into binding off-take agreements. Without firm contracts, the financing for these plants remains speculative.

Exactly. I want to know the actual capacity of these projects. 200 suppliers sounds like a lot, but if they are all small scale pilots, it does not move the needle on grid decarbonization. What is the total GW of electrolysis actually being matched?

Curious to see which industrial sectors are showing the most interest. If it is just refineries, that is one thing. If we are seeing heavy duty heat applications in old factories, that is where the real retrofit challenge begins.

EU is trying to build a market from scratch here. The matchmaking platform is a decent start to reduce search costs for developers, but the price gap between grey and green H2 is still the main hurdle.
