EU Hydrogen Bank fourth auction cuts budget to 500 million euros, drops maritime and aviation baskets
gasworld.comThe European Commission has announced the fourth European Hydrogen Bank auction with a significantly reduced budget of 500 million euros, down more than 60% from previous rounds. The auction will offer production subsidies of up to 4 euros per kilogram for green and low-carbon electrolytic hydrogen over 10 years. Notably, the dedicated funding baskets for maritime and aviation have been removed, with 350 million euros reserved for green hydrogen under RFNBO rules and 150 million euros open to both RFNBO and low-carbon electrolytic hydrogen. Previous auctions have seen a high dropout rate among selected projects, with only 270.6 million euros of the 1.2 billion euros allocated in the second round ultimately awarded. New tie-break rules aim to prioritize projects requesting less grant funding, those from countries that have received less Innovation Fund support, and projects expected to start operating sooner. Successful projects must still reach financial close within two and a half years and enter operations within five years.
