EU greenwashing rules now require scientific evidence for net-zero and carbon offset claims
impactalpha.comThe EU's Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition Directive (EmpCo) is now in force, requiring companies to back sustainability claims with detailed, verifiable plans. Net-zero pledges must include measurable targets, allocated resources, and independent third-party verification. Products marketed as carbon neutral can no longer rely on offset purchases unless emissions are actually reduced within the product's value chain. Generic labels like eco-friendly or biodegradable now need scientific proof, and sustainability labels must come from verified third parties. The directive also covers financial institutions, so green funds and ESG products face the same evidence standard. However, implementation is uneven: at least 17 member states, including Spain and France, missed the March transposition deadline, delaying consumer benefits.
