A 7.2 percent jump in energy sector emissions is a massive red flag. This usually happens when renewables fail to meet peak winter demand and the grid falls back on old gas or coal plants. I wonder if this was a capacity issue or just a brutal winter.
It is interesting that 7 countries managed to grow GDP while cutting emissions. That is the actual goal of decoupling. The problem is the other 19 states where the incentive structure clearly is not working fast enough to offset energy demand.
Households cutting emissions by 2 percent is a start, but it is likely just a result of higher energy prices forcing people to turn down the heat. Real reductions come from deep retrofits, not just paying more for gas.
Eurostat data shows the EU is struggling to keep emissions down in energy and transport despite the GDP growth. Finland and Malta are the standouts here, but the overall trend for the bloc is still moving the wrong way.
