European Commission data shows EU green bond issuance reached €39 billion from January to October 2026, nearly double the €21 billion issued in all of 2025. The total since December 2024 is around €60 billion. The figures also show over €320 billion was invested in EU Taxonomy-aligned activities in 2025, with the energy sector taking the largest share, driven mainly by electricity providers. Taxonomy-aligned investment since 2021 now tops €1.2 trillion. The EU presents these numbers as evidence that its sustainable finance framework is linking economic growth with decarbonisation, especially through renewable energy, electrification, and clean technology. The European Green Bond Standard remains voluntary, and the Commission says it is working on simplifying the framework. One gap stands out: the Commission did not describe the methodology used to calculate the investment and issuance figures. That makes it harder to compare these numbers with previous years or to assess how much of the activity is genuinely additional.
