EU-funded TITAN project validates biogas-to-hydrogen tech with solid carbon storage potential

The system achieved methane conversion rates above 85% and produced an iron-carbon material suitable for long-term soil carbon storage, with studies showing minimal breakdown. At scale, hydrogen production costs could reach around EUR 4.5 per kilogram, competitive with water electrolysis, and the process uses electricity more efficiently, producing 51-57 grams of hydrogen per kWh versus 20 grams for electrolysis. The project estimates potential production of up to 0.6 million metric tons of hydrogen per year by 2030, rising to nearly 4 million by 2045, with cumulative greenhouse gas savings of 237 million metric tons of CO2. Key policy recommendations include recognizing biohydrogen as renewable hydrogen in EU legislation and creating frameworks for solid carbon use in agriculture. The technology offers a dual benefit: renewable hydrogen for hard-to-decarbonize sectors and a carbon storage pathway, though scale-up and regulatory support remain critical next steps.
