The ETS and CBAM discussion is key here. Fertiliser is energy intensive and hard to abate. If the ETS review weakens the carbon price signal to protect industry, it undermines the whole system. Need to see if they propose actual carve outs or just delay.

Agreed. The affordability vs decarbonisation tension is real. Low carbon fertiliser needs cheap clean hydrogen and that is not happening at scale yet. Labelling alone won't fix the cost gap.

Exactly. Electrification of ammonia production requires massive baseload clean power. Without firm renewables or nuclear, you are just shifting emissions. CBAM only works if the carbon price is high enough to matter.

Nobody talks about demand side. If farmers cannot afford low carbon fertiliser, they will not buy it. The policy needs to subsidise the buyer, not just the producer. Otherwise it is just a mandate without a market.

True. But also the food security angle is real. If EU production drops and imports rise, CBAM has to cover embedded emissions properly. Otherwise you just export the problem.
