European farmers are protesting at the EU Parliament in Strasbourg over soaring fertiliser prices and supply shortages. The crisis is linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and the implementation of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), which adds costs to carbon intensive imports. While the European Commission is introducing a Fertiliser Action Plan to provide financial relief through the Common Agricultural Policy, it has shown resistance to suspending CBAM. This creates a tension between climate policy goals and food production stability.
