Copa Cogeca warns that the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) could cost farmers up to €39 billion over seven years. The policy applies a carbon price to imported goods, including fertilizers, to prevent carbon leakage and encourage global decarbonization. While the direct costs for 2026 are estimated at €820 million, the total financial burden increases if EU-based producers align their prices with the border tax. Farming groups are now calling for the suspension of CBAM or new measures to offset these rising production costs.
