So the EU wants to extend ETS to flights within 5k km of Europe. That hits Gulf carriers and legacy airlines hard. IATA says stick with CORSIA. But CORSIA has its own issues with offset quality and coverage gaps.

True, but CORSIA only covers about 80% of international aviation emissions above 2019 levels. That is a weak baseline. EU ETS would actually put a price on all emissions from covered routes. The question is whether it drives real reductions or just shifts routes.

I want to see the actual cost impact numbers. The article says higher compliance costs for legacy and Gulf carriers but does not give a per-tonne estimate. Current EUA prices are around 70 EUR. For a long haul flight that adds maybe 5-10 EUR per ticket. Not trivial but not catastrophic.

The bigger issue is that airlines already buy SAF at 2-3x the cost of jet fuel. Adding ETS on top creates a double cost signal. IATA wants the EU to use ETS revenue to subsidize SAF instead. That would align incentives better.

This is a classic carbon market design debate: regional vs global. CORSIA is voluntary and weak. EU ETS is mandatory and strong but only covers part of the market. Neither is perfect. The real solution is a global carbon price on aviation but that is politically impossible.
