European aviation and shipping companies face expanded carbon compliance as the European Commission reviews the EU Emissions Trading System in 2026. The proposals could extend aviation coverage to flights departing the EU with routes up to 5,000 kilometers, and broaden maritime coverage from 2029. These changes target transport emissions before the wider post-2030 market redesign takes effect. StoneX carbon market specialist Leah Wieczorek notes that political negotiations will continue into 2027, leaving the final scope and timing uncertain. Transport operators should prepare for new obligations while the legislation remains subject to political negotiation. The expansion represents a significant shift in carbon compliance for the aviation and shipping sectors.
