New maritime emissions frameworks are splitting the LNG shipping industry. Modern vessels with low methane slip remain competitive, while older steam turbine and dual fuel diesel electric ships face rising compliance costs under the EU ETS and FuelEU Maritime rules. By 2030, penalties for non-compliant vessels on European routes could make them commercially unviable. Ship owners are now weighing retrofits against scrapping or converting vessels to FSRUs as the window for compliance narrows.
