European Parliament committees voted to soften the EU's 2035 car CO2 target. The environment committee backed an 87.5% emissions cut for new cars, with a 7.5% top-up from EU-made low-carbon steel, bringing the total to 95%. That falls short of the full combustion engine phaseout the EU previously planned. The vote also turned mandatory zero-emission shares for corporate fleets into aspirational goals and added super credits for small or efficient EVs. Automakers would face a weaker mandate, while EU low-carbon steelmakers gain a role in compliance. The full Parliament votes on the package in December, after which negotiations with EU governments will set the final shape.
