New analysis from Wood Mackenzie shows a growing economic divide in the LNG carrier market. Modern vessels with ME-GI engines are maintaining viability, while older steam turbine and DFDE ships face rising costs due to the EU Emissions Trading System and FuelEU Maritime regulations. Methane slip is now a direct financial liability under European law, making older dual-fuel diesel electric vessels less attractive to charterers. This regulatory pressure may accelerate the retirement of older ships or push them toward conversion into floating storage and regasification units.
