EU Bans Offset-Based Carbon Neutral Claims: New Greenwashing Rules Take Effect Sept. 27
foodprocessing.comStarting Sept. 27, the EU's Directive (EU) 2024/825 bans product-level claims like 'carbon neutral' when they rely on carbon credits bought outside the product's value chain. The rules apply to any business selling to EU consumers, including foreign companies, and cover packaging, websites, ads and social media. Generic environmental claims now need recognized excellent environmental performance, not just a certificate. Future pledges such as 'net zero by 2030' must be backed by public, verifiable plans with interim targets and independent checks. Companies can still fund carbon projects and use life cycle assessments to make specific claims, such as a 30% reduction against a 2023 baseline, as long as the evidence is current and accurate. Businesses should audit their EU-facing marketing before the deadline.
