A study from Chalmers University of Technology suggests that current EU regulations for synthetic aviation fuels favor less efficient production methods. By prioritizing certain Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) pathways, the rules may push the industry toward combustion-based processes rather than more efficient gasification. This regulatory misalignment could lead to higher production costs and increased electricity demand, potentially slowing the transition to fossil-free aviation. Researchers argue that adjusting these definitions is necessary to avoid locking in resource-intensive infrastructure and to meet long-term climate targets.
