A study from Chalmers University of Technology suggests that EU regulations for sustainable aviation fuels may be pushing the industry toward inefficient production methods. By prioritizing Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBOs), the current framework favors biomass combustion over gasification, leading to higher costs and energy waste. Biomass gasification is found to be 30% more electricity-efficient and 46% cheaper than combustion-based routes. However, strict EU definitions of RFNBOs exclude gasification, potentially increasing the carbon footprint of the energy used to create these fossil-free fuels.
